Clever Tip To Instantly Get A Refund On Your HELB Loan Overpayment

Upon benefiting from HELB funding and in stable employment, it is only ethical to repay your loan obligations so that it may also support future applicants towards pursuing higher education.

As such, HELB loan repayment has transitioned from the traditional repayment channels to the E-Citizen payment gateway whereby repayment can be made using any of the applicable platforms such as USSD, Helb mobile app, loanee portal or employer portal.

Official Helb Repayment Channels

The process of making repayments through the HELB designated channels can be categorized into two (2) i.e individual and employer.

A) Individual

There are four platforms to enable the individual customer make payments for their loan and they include;

1. USSD Code *642#

  • Dial *642#
  • Login/register (new applicant)
  • Select ‘Loan Repayment’
  • Select ‘Repay Loan’
  • Select ‘M-PESA’
  • Choose the option to either pay full/specific amount
  • Enter your preferred repayment amount
  • Confirm the amount by selecting ‘Yes’
  • You will then receive an SMS notification from eCitizen bearing an invoice number, payment amount and the Paybill No. 222222
  • Upon receipt of the payment prompt, proceed and input your M-PESA PIN
  • You will receive a notification from HELB Acknowledging receipt of the payment.

2. USSD Code *334#

  • Dial *334#
  • Select ‘Lipa Na M-PESA’
  • Select ‘Government Services’
  • Select ‘HELB’
  • Select ‘Login’ and enter your PIN
  • Select ‘Loan Repayment’
  • Select ‘Repay Loan’
  • Select ‘M-PESA’
  • Choose the option to either pay full/specific amount
  • Enter your preferred repayment amount
  • Confirm the amount by selecting ‘Yes’
  • You will then receive an SMS notification from eCitizen bearing an invoice number, payment amount and the Paybill No. 222222
  • Upon receipt of the payment prompt, proceed and input your M-PESA PIN
  • You will receive a notification from HELB acknowledging receipt of the payment.

3. Helb Mobile App

  • Download the HELB Mobile App from Playstore.
  • Login/register (new applicant)
  • Tap ‘Pay loan’
  • Confirm phone number and repayment amount
  • Upon receipt of the payment prompt, proceed and input your M-PESA PIN
  • You will receive a notification from E-citizen, M-PESA and HELB acknowledging receipt of the payment.

4. Loanee Self Portal

  • Navigate to the Helb Loanee Self Service Portal
  • Login/register (new applicant)
  • Select ‘Self-Serve’ on the HELB menu
  • Select ‘Loan Repayment’ on the sub-menu
  • Tap ‘Make Payment’
  • Enter your preferred repayment amount
  • Click ‘Pay’
  • Tap ‘OK’ to confirm on the received notification
  • Select payment mode as ‘M-PESA’
  • Tap ‘Send STK’
  • Upon receipt of the payment prompt, proceed and input your M-PESA PIN
  • Tap ‘Complete’ once payment has been made
  • You will receive a notification from HELB acknowledging receipt of the payment.

B) Employer

There is only one platform to effect repayment via employers which is via;

1. Employer Portal

  • Login to the Helb Employers Portal
  • Select ‘Remittance’ on the menu
  • Upload Remittance List
  • Verify submitted details for accuracy
  • Click ‘Confirm’ to complete the remittance process and print the e-slip
  • Select ‘Payments’ on the menu
  • Choose remittance record to pay then tap ‘Make Payment’
  • Enter mobile phone number
  • Select preferred mode of payment from the list of available options (M-PESA, Pesaflow Direct, RTGS, Equity Bank or KCB)
  • Tap ‘Process Payment’
  • Upon completion of the payment, the chosen remittance record will be automatically updated
  • Select ‘Statements’ on the menu
  • Tap ‘Print Receipt’ to view details of the payment

However, there are some instances whereby you may discover that you have overpaid your Helb loan. In such a scenario, you will receive a refund from HELB and not your employer upon filing and submission of correctly filled form and confirmation of loan deduction stoppage by employer.

In addition, refunds are typically paid through electronic fund transfer(EFT) to bank account and any over-payments below Ksh1,000 are non-refundable.

Therefore to initiate this process, follow the procedure outlined below.

  • Download the Helb Loan Recovery Enquiry form
  • Select the option ‘Refund due to over deductions’
  • Enter your required personal details (current full names, names as at university, national ID number, name of university attended/registration number, degree/diploma, pursued course, study period etc)
  • Enter your employment details (employer, employment number, telephone, address etc)
  • Indicate loan repayment history (employer, payroll number, monthly deductions and period)
  • Enter bank details (bank name & branch, account name & number)

Once duly filled, you have the option to either send the form via email at contactcentre@helb.co.ke or submit it personally at the HELB offices located at Anniversary Towers, University Way.

Please note that valid refunds will be paid within 60 days of request.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can HELB deduct from salary?

No. HELB cannot deduct from salary unless the employer initiates a check-off system whereby monthly deductions are made on your salary and remitted to HELB as repayment on your loan.

2. Does HELB refund over-payments?

Yes. HELB does refund over-payments that are more than Ksh1,000 through your bank account upon submission of a filled claim form.
