Yellow fever is an acute viral disease transmitted through mosquitoes majorly prevalent in tropical areas whereby the term ‘yellow’ is derived from the symptoms such as jaundice characterized by the yellowing of the eyes.
Additional symptoms may include headaches, muscle pains, vomiting, nausea, fatigue, fever, bleeding through eyes, nose and mouth and at times even death.
These symptoms usually require an incubation period of about 3-6 days after infection for them to be visible.
Therefore as a preventive measure, many countries prone to yellow fever require prior vaccination of travelers aged 9 months and above within 10 days before transiting to or from affected countries and as such, proof of vaccination is required through a yellow fever certificate.
A yellow fever certificate is a document that is literally yellow in color and contains the holder’s details such as name, address etc
However, the yellow fever certificate is not required by all countries thus is only applicable to select countries with a prevalence to yellow fever as listed below.
