While the above only applied to Lipa Na MPesa transactions, other transactions done via ‘Send Money’ option are still susceptible to data breaches.

Despite Safaricom knowledge of this, the network provider has exhibited little to no intentions of reviewing the ‘Send Money’ privacy policy.

Fortunately, there exists workarounds whereby MPesa users can effectively send MPesa anonymously.

How To Send MPesa Anonymously

1. Direct Deposit Via MPesa Agent

While this method is unauthorized by Safaricom, it is among the ways to send MPesa anonymously.

This method involves going to an authorized MPesa agent and directly depositing money to the recipient by providing the national ID details, phone number and amount to be transferred to the recipient.

The recipient will then receive a deposit confirmation message with the below format and it will not reveal the sender’s details.

2. Send M-PESA Anonymously Via LOOP App

LOOP is a digital super wallet that enables users to manage all bank and mobile accounts centrally within the app.

It also provides credit facilities such as loans & overdrafts, buy now, pay later, savings & investments as well as personalized deals and discounts based on one’s interest and location.

To get started with LOOP and send M-PESA anonymously, follow the below procedure;

a) Download LOOP app from Playstore/Appstore

b) Install and launch the app

c) Click on ‘Register/Sign In’

d) Click on ‘Create an account’

e) Enter your phone number

f) Agree to the Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policy by selecting the associated checkboxes

g) Click ‘Next’

h) You will receive a 4-digit verification code to the phone number submitted above which will be automatically detected by the app.

i) Enter your national ID number and click ‘Next’

j) Enter your names (first, middle & surname)

k) Enter your email address

l) Enter invitation code (Vincent6011) and click ‘Next’

m) Create and confirm your password then click ‘Set’ (Note: Your password should contain 1 Upper case letter, 1 Lower case letter, 8 Characters. 1 Special character, 1 Numeric)

n) Create and confirm your 4-digit PIN code, then tap ‘Next;

o) You will receive an email verification link to the email address submitted earlier

p) Upload both the front and back of your national ID and click on ‘Save’

Once your account has been activated, you can proceed and use the LOOP app for your transactions including sending money anonymously via the below procedure;

q) Login to the LOOP app

r) Click on ‘Send Money’

s) Tap on ‘M-PESA’

t) Enter the required details such as recipient phone number, name & amount then click ‘Next’

u) Choose your payment mode either ‘wallet’ or ‘loop bank’ then click ‘Confirm’

v) Enter your LOOP PIN to finalize the transaction

The recipient will then receive an M-PESA message with the below format and it will not reveal the sender’s details.

With the use of the mobile app PrivPay, you can send money to a person easily using M-PESA without giving up your identity or phone number.

To get started with PrivPay and send M-PESA anonymously;

a) Download & install PrivPay app from Playstore

b) Open the app, review the terms and conditions, and select “I Agree” to confirm your agreement.

c) Create an account by inputting your phone number, generating a PIN and entering a nickname then click ‘Done’

d) Once logged in your dashboard, click on ‘Send’ located at the bottom of the app menu

e) Enter recipient phone number and amount to be sent (Note: Amount should not be less than Ksh50)

f) Enter description of the narration, then click ‘Proceed’

g) Confirm the transaction details summary and click ‘Send’

h) You will receive a PrivPay verification code via SMS that will be automatically detected by the app.

i) An STK message will pop up requiring you to input your M-PESA PIN

j) Upon successful transaction, you will receive confirmation SMS from both SiriYangu and M-PESA
