The KRA Pin is a unique alphanumeric code assigned to Kenyans over the age of 18 who are either in employment, own a business, have rental income, applying for a helb loan or transacting with various government agencies.
The major benefit of the KRA pin is that it assists the Kenya revenue agency in the collection and fulfillment of tax obligations required by the Kenyan law.
In-order to be assigned a KRA pin, one needs to make an application via the itax portal whereby Kenyan residents receive their PIN Certificate instantly after completing the online registration form while Non-residents receive an acknowledgement receipt which they should present to Times Tower, alongside other relevant documents, to complete their registration process.
During the application process, applicants are required to create accounts that are to be used for all future transactions with KRA.
These accounts can only be accessed using an individual’s KRA Pin and password.
However, there are instances where individuals may be locked out of their accounts for not remembering the login details of either of the 2.
While there are possible methods to recover them, they are usually not ideal in emergency situations.
For example, if one does not remember his/her KRA PIN, one is required to scan both sides of the national ID and email them to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Another option is to personally visit the KRA office or nearest Huduma center with an original national ID.
However, there is also a nice little trick on how to retrieve your KRA Pin using only an ID number. To do this, follow the below procedure.
- Download and install the KRA app from the Playstore.
- Launch the app, read and agree to the terms of service by toggling the switch.
- Click ‘Continue’
- Click on ‘Sign Up’
- Enter your ID number
- Enter email address, phone number and password.
- Click ‘Proceed’
A screen pop up bearing your name and KRA Pin will appear.
