Here’s What Happens When You Default On An UbaPesa Loan

ub23

Ubapesa is among the numerous loan apps that offer unsecured mobile loans to millions of Kenyan applicants including myself.

Though they have a flexible repayment period of between 10 to 20 days whereby users can choose from, sometimes unfortunate circumstances divert our initial commitments and we find ourselves on the negative side of situations.

In this case, the inability to repay on time.

Below is a timeline of what happened when i ‘accidentally’ defaulted on an Ubapesa loan for 11 days.

DAY 1

  • I was instantly charged a 10% penalty on my outstanding loan.

DAY 2 – DAY 4

  • I received zero SMS messages from UbaPesa that i almost thought that they had forgotten.

DAY 5

  • SMS messages started streaming in requesting me to ‘Kindly but urgently repay my loan to avoid additional penalties.

DAY 6 – DAY 7

  • No SMS whatsoever.

DAY 8

  • SMS messages continued streaming in requesting me to ‘Kindly but urgently repay my loan to avoid additional penalties.

DAY 9 – DAY 10

  • Zero SMS messages.

DAY 11

  • I managed to repay the overdue amount and immediately attempted to request for another loan. I was instantly slapped with an intimidating reddish-orange pop up box with a demoralizing single subject line that read FAILED!

  • The rest of its contents were further heart-breaking through its revelation that my loan application was declined due to my previous default.

UPDATE: It has been 60 days and i am still being denied a loan after defaulting.
